Questo volume è nato con l'intento di porre in rilievo gli stretti legami che sussistono fra drammaturgia e giure nell'opera del Giraldi. Tenendo conto della funzione didattico-pedagogica per tradizione demandata alla tragedia, in un'epoca in cui non vigeva la moderna suddivisione del sapere, il teatro del Cinzio rivolge a un pubblico in grado di comprenderne il significato conoscenze giuridiche dottrinarie e metodiche. Perfettamente in sintonia con la macchina conciliare, Selene affronta il delicato tema dell'adulterio oggetto, assieme al divorzio, di un'intera sessione tridentina. Un reato che fornisce ancora in Arrenopia il pretesto per allestire una grande kermesse cavalleresca con ampie riflessioni sul duello, strumento ormai non più tollerabile per l'accertamento di un diritto violato o anche soltanto per l'ostentazione di spavalde virtù guerresche nella incruenta coreografia dei tornei. Con il dramma dello stupro e, sub specie pubblicistica, con un caso di abuso di potere, Epizia chiude un percorso in cui è valorizzato il diritto nella sua finalità di dare sicurezza ai rapporti sociali e preservare la regolarità della loro gestione.

Giovan Battista Giraldi Cinzio è una delle personalità intellettuali più. interessanti del panorama italiano mediocinquecentesco. Autore di tragedie di imitazione da Seneca (con accentuati elementi di orrore), tra le quali la più nota è l'Orbecche (del 1541), raccoglie negli Ecatommiti (composti già nel 1541 ma editi solo nel 1565) cento novelle fortemente tragiche. Giovan Battista Giraldi nasce a Ferrara il 30 novembre 1504. Presso l’Ateneo estense compie i suoi studi umanistici e tiene la cattedra di Retorica. Dopo la morte di Ercole II , di cui era stato segretario , perde il favore della corte e lascia Ferrara per continuare l’insegnamento a Mondovì e Pavia. Rientra nella città natale solo per morirvi il 29 dicembre 1973. Seguendo la consuetudine umanistica , il Giraldi assume il nome di “Cinthio” fin dall’inizio della sua carriera letteraria.I suoi scritti teorici sulla composizione teatrale offrirono contributi interessanti ad un dibattito che , nel Cinquecento, coinvolse studiosi di tutta Europa. La tragedia Orbecche, rappresentata in casa dell’autore alla presenza del Duca nel 1541, ebbe un grande successo di pubblico e rimane uno dei più riusciti esempi di tragedia senecana. Una sua raccolta di novelle pubblicata nel 1563 e tradotta in francese vent’anni dopo, ebbe ampia diffusione in Europa e fornì a Shakespeare la trama per Otello e Misura per Misura.

How far can the relationship between music and politics be used to promote a more peaceful world? That is the central question which motivates this challenging new work. Combining theory from renowned academics such as Johan Galtung, Cindy Cohen and Karen Abi-Ezzi with compelling stories from musicians like Yair Dalal, the book also includes an exclusive interview with folk legend Pete Seeger. In each instance, practical and theoretical perspectives have been combined in order to explore music's role in conflict transformation.The book is divided into five sections. The first, 'Frameworks', reflects indepth on the connections between music and peace, while the second, 'Music and Politics', discusses the actual impact of music on society. The third section, 'Healing and Education' offers specific examples of the transformative power of music in prisons and other settings of conflict-resolution, while the fourth, 'Stories from the Field', tells true stories about music's impact in the Middle East and elsewhere. Finally, 'Reflections' encourages the reader to consider a personal evaluation of the work with a view to further explorations of the capacity of music to promote peace-building.
Olivier Urbain is research fellow at the Toda Institute for Global Peace and Policy Research in Tokyo, former professor of Modern Languages and Peace Studies at Soka University, Japan, and founder and former director of the Transcend: Art and Peace Network (T:AP), the artistic branch of Johan Galtung's TRANSCEND peace and development network. An amateur blues pianist, he specializes in the links between music and peace. Publications include several articles on this topic and about the power of the arts for peace. He is currently the co-convenor of the Commission on Art and Peace (CAP) of the International Peace Research Association (IPRA) and member of the IPRA council.

No standard format attaches to the composition of judgments by judges working within the Common Law dispensation. Normally, of course, we get a recital of the facts of the individual controversy, a statement of applicable legal doctrine, an analysis of precedent and an adjudication. Increasingly, room has had to be found for the interpretation of statute law provisions, testimony to the exponential growth in contemporary society of public law. From time to time, however, members of the judiciary have found it useful to embellish their judgments by allusion to matters literary – quotations from the Bible or Shakespeare, for example. This is designed in almost all instances to sharpen the logic inherent in the judicial decision-making process. This book examines a host of ‘fragments’ thus judicially recalled – from a range of jurisdictions (mainly England and Ireland) – and sets out to explain just a little bit more about the legal contexts which provoked the employment of these fragments and about the fragments themselves. W.N. Osborough explores the use of literary quotation and allusion in legal judgments within the tradition of Common Law. He hopes that lawyers and law students, normally the only ones to read such judgments, will find judgments and judicial extracts they were not aware of before; and that non-lawyers will learn something about how members of the judiciary go about the business of preparing judgments.
W. N. Osborough, emeritus professor of law, University College Dublin, is the author of Law and the emergence of modern Dublin (1996) and Studies in Irish legal history (1999). He has also edited several books in the Irish Legal History Series, including, most recently, Adventures of the law: proceedings of the 16th British Legal History Conference (2005).

Over the last few decades, Victorian scholars have produced many nuanced studies connecting the politics of crime to the generic developments of the novel—and vice versa. Ellen L. O’Brien’s Crime in Verse grants the same attention and status to poetic representations of crime. Considering the literary achievements and cultural engagements of poetry while historicizing murder’s entanglement in legal fictions, punitive practices, medical theories, class conflicts, and gender codes, O’Brien argues that shifting approaches to poetry and conflicted understandings of murder allowed poets to align problems of legal and literary interpretation in provocative, disruptive, and innovative ways.
Developing focused analyses of generic and discursive meanings, individual chapters examine the classed politics of crime and punishment in the broadside ballad, the epistemological tensions of homicidal lunacy and criminal responsibility in the dramatic monologue, and the legal and ideological frictions of domestic violence in the verse novel and verse drama. Their juxtaposition of the rhymes of anonymous street balladeers, the underexamined verse of “minor” poets, and the familiar poems of canonical figures suggests the interactive and intertextual relationships informing poetic agendas and political arguments. As it simultaneously reconsiders the institutional and ideological status of murder and the aesthetic and political interests of poetry, Crime in Verse offers new ways of thinking about Victorian poetry’s contents and contexts.

Un Juez rural, por Guillermo García Moscoso

Un Juez Rural de Pedro Prado debería ser una lectura obligatoria para todo estudiante de Derecho. A esa fue la conclusión que llegamos hoy, conversando con un profesor de la Facultad y que ahora, sopesándola, considero más verdadera que nunca.
Hace poco leí que Alejandro Zambra decía que los escritores de ficción de hoy sólo leen ficción y que los escritores de poesía sólo se quedan en ella y que por ahí iba el porqué de la baja calidad de la literatura chilena actual. De esa afirmación, que realmente no he entrado a pensar si comparto o no, sí puedo extraer algo que viene al caso: “Un Juez Rural” es una muy linda novela poética en prosa. Tan linda que felizmente puede caminar de la mano con obras, también en prosa, de Juan Emar o Vicente Huidobro.
Si bien los estilos y los movimientos son distintos, hay un amor y conexión en la belleza, y eso es lo que realmente importa.Cerrando, sólo un comentario: lecturas como las de Un Juez Rural nos hacen darle una vuelta de tuerca a lo que consideramos realmente justo. Esa es una de las tantas ayudas que nos puede entregar la ficción a quienes nos interesamos por el Derecho.
